Common VAT Tasks

This page is useful for checking consumer prices, calculating business invoices, comparing pre-tax and post-tax amounts, and reversing VAT from a total amount you already paid or received.

The Reverse-VAT Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

Faced with a €121 gross price at 21% VAT, the instinctive move is to subtract 21% of €121 — but that's wrong. VAT was added on top of the net price, not the gross price, so the percentage has to come off a different base than the one people naturally reach for. Subtracting 21% of €121 (€25.41) gives €95.59, which is too low. The correct net price is €121 ÷ 1.21 = exactly €100. This is precisely the calculation the remove-VAT mode performs, so switching to that mode instead of doing the subtraction by hand avoids the error entirely.

FAQ

How do I calculate VAT from a gross price?

Use the remove-VAT mode, enter the total gross amount, and apply the correct VAT rate. The calculator will separate the VAT amount from the net amount.

Can I use this for both adding and removing VAT?

Yes. The calculator supports both directions so you can start from either a net price or a gross price.

Which VAT rate should I enter?

Use the rate that applies to your product, service, or country-specific rule. The calculator only performs the math, so the correct rate still depends on your situation.

Why can't I just subtract 21% from a gross price to find the net price?

Because 21% VAT was added on top of the net price, not the gross price, so subtracting 21% of the gross total overcorrects. For a €121 gross price at 21% VAT, subtracting 21% of €121 (€25.41) wrongly gives €95.59. The correct net price is €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 exactly, which is what the remove-VAT mode calculates for you.
